New Roof Giveaway in Albuquerque: Help Us Find the Family Who Needs It Before El Niño Hits Hardest
El Niño is here, and NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center expects it to stay strong to very strong through early 2027. For most Albuquerque homeowners, that means a reminder to clean the gutters and check the flashing. For some families, it means another season of buckets under the leaks, because a new roof is a bill they can’t cover.
We want to find one of those families. Dave and Dominique Baca of Enchanted Roofing are teaming up with John and Christina Lopez of John Lopez Real Estate Group on a new roof giveaway in Albuquerque: one local family will get a brand-new roof. Nominations close November 26.
What Is the New Roof Giveaway?
It’s exactly what it sounds like. We’ll replace the roof on one local family’s home at no cost to them. There’s no application fee and nothing to buy. We’re asking Albuquerque to help us find a family living under a failing roof who can’t afford to replace it.
Who’s behind it: Enchanted Roofing (Dave & Dominique Baca) and John Lopez Real Estate Group (John & Christina Lopez)
Nomination deadline: November 26, 2026
Who can nominate: Anyone. You can nominate a neighbor, friend, relative, coworker, or your own household.
El Niño Roof Prep in Albuquerque: Why This Winter Is Different
El Niño winters tend to tilt wetter across the southern U.S., including New Mexico. NOAA notes that a stronger event makes those impacts more likely, though no outcome is guaranteed. More rain and snow puts the most pressure on roofs that are already compromised.
Water finds the weak spots first. Worn flashing, split seams, and cracked membranes are where leaks start.
Small leaks don’t stay small. Water that gets past the roof surface can soak decking and insulation and stain or damage the ceilings below.
Freeze-thaw cycles widen gaps. Albuquerque’s cold nights and sunny days can turn minor cracks into bigger openings over a winter.
Patches buy time, not protection. A roof that has been repaired over and over in the same spot is often telling you something.
For a family already stretched thin, a wet winter can turn a roof problem into a whole-house problem.
Signs a Roof Won’t Make It Through Another Winter
Use this list to think about who might need a nomination, or to check your own home:
Water stains on ceilings or walls, especially stains that grow after a storm
Ponding water on a flat roof that’s still standing 48 hours after rain
Cracked, blistered, or separating membrane on flat and low-slope roofs
Missing, curling, or cracked shingles on pitched roofs
Damaged or lifting flashing around vents, skylights, parapets, and chimneys
Sagging along the roofline or ceilings
Repeated patch repairs on the same section of roof
None of these signs alone means a roof needs replacing. Only an on-site inspection can tell you that. If you’re seeing them on your own home, you can schedule a roof inspection in Albuquerque before winter weather sets in.
How to Nominate a Family
Step 1: Go to the nomination form. You’ll find it on our homepage.
Step 2: Start your message with “NOMINATION.” Include the family’s name, the neighborhood or ZIP code, and what you know about the roof’s condition.
Step 3: Tell us their story. Why this family, and why now?
Please don’t include medical records, Social Security numbers, or financial account information. If we need more details, we’ll reach out to you directly.
How the Family Will Be Chosen
Enchanted Roofing and John Lopez Real Estate Group will review every nomination after November 26 and select one family. We’ll share updates, and introduce the family if they’re comfortable with it, on our Facebook and Instagram pages.
Why We’re Doing This
Every week, we’re on roofs across Albuquerque. We see what a failing roof does to a home, and we know that for some families, replacement just isn’t in reach. Instead of waiting for the right family to find us, we decided to ask the community to help us find them.
